Avanos Pottery Workshop: Make Your Own Pot in Cappadocia

4.836 reviewsActivity provider: Cappadocia Tours, TÜRSAB-licensed

Avanos has shaped the red clay of the Kızılırmak for thousands of years, probably since the Hittites, and this is where you try it yourself. A potter from a family workshop shows you how the wheel works, then you take the seat and shape your own piece, with a steadying hand when the clay wobbles. Turkish tea or coffee, a look round the gallery with no obligation to buy, and you leave with what you made. Come any time between 09:00 and 22:00; private sessions for couples and families.

Questions about this tour

Can I take my pottery home?

Yes, the same day. Your piece is still unfired: firing needs days of drying and a kiln, so you take it home as shaped clay. Leave it to dry at room temperature for a few days and it hardens enough to travel wrapped in clothes. It is a keepsake, not for food or water.

Do I need any pottery experience?

None. Most guests have never sat at a wheel. The potter shows you first, then guides your hands until the clay turns true.

How long does the pottery class take?

45 to 90 minutes in all: tea, a short demonstration, your turn at the wheel and a look round the gallery.

What time can I come?

Any time between 09:00 and 22:00. Book, tell us roughly when you will arrive, and we let the workshop know. It fits after a balloon flight, before dinner, or on a morning when the balloons are grounded. Hot Air Balloon Flight.

Is hotel pickup included? How do I get to Avanos?

No, you make your own way. Avanos is about 10 km from Göreme, around 15 minutes by taxi. We send the address and a map pin on WhatsApp when you book. Message us.

Will I be pushed to buy pottery?

No. After the class you can look round the workshop's gallery, but there is no obligation to buy anything. The class price covers the class, the tea and the piece you make.

Is the Avanos pottery workshop worth it?

If you want an hour with your hands in the clay rather than another viewpoint, yes. It suits couples, families and anyone with a free morning or evening, and it runs when the weather keeps the balloons and ATVs on the ground. All activities.

Why is Avanos famous for pottery?

Avanos sits on the Kızılırmak, Turkey's longest river, and its potters have worked the river's red clay for thousands of years, probably since the Hittites. Pieces were traditionally thrown on a kick wheel turned by foot, and Avanos pottery has been a registered Turkish geographical indication since 2017. Red Tour (stops in Avanos).
